Radiant's Freight Market Update: September 4, 2025

This week: Federal appeals court ruled that President Trump’s emergency-powers tariffs were illegal; Canada and U.S. negotiating to resolve tariff issues; Demand distortions are shaking logistics from port to shelf.

Current Critical Industry Trends

Federal appeals court ruled Aug. 29 that President Trump’s emergency-powers tariffs were illegal, but left them in place until Oct. 14 for a possible Supreme Court review. The decision casts uncertainty over tariffs affecting trillions in global trade, raising the risk of major supply chain shifts. Businesses now face weeks of uncertainty as the case moves toward the high court.

Canada and the U.S. are negotiating to resolve tariff issues in autos, steel, and aluminum. Agreements are expected in some sectors, but Prime Minister Mark Carney cautioned deals may take time. The talks occur amid ongoing tariffs and a potential Supreme Court review, keeping supply chains and trade flows uncertain.

Ocean

CMACGM launched its KILIMA service in August, linking China directly to Kenya and Tanzania. The network improves transit times and connectivity across East Africa, serving key ports like Zanzibar, Lamu, and Mogadishu with transshipment via Singapore and Colombo. Inland links to Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zambia, Malawi, and the DRC enhance regional trade efficiency.

Ports

Adani Gangavaram Port handled a record 66 vessels in August. Operational improvements and coordinated planning across marine, logistics, and terminal teams enabled faster vessel turnaround and efficient cargo handling. The port continues to support regional trade with container, bulk, and breakbulk operations.

International

LNG Canada shipped its 10th LNG cargo on Sept. 2. The facility currently produces 14 million tonnes per year with low GHG intensity, supplying global markets including Japan. Plans for a Phase 2 expansion could increase capacity further, though a final investment decision is still pending.

Trucking

Trucking hauls through a tough 2024 with grit and resilience. Despite revenue and volume drops, trucks still carried over 72% of domestic freight. Small carriers continue to power the backbone of U.S. logistics.

Rail

Rail investments reshape global trade and climate goals. The World Bank is backing rail expansion in 20+ countries to cut emissions and boost efficiency. From India to Cameroon, logistics costs are dropping while economic connectivity is rising.

Engineers push back on stalled contract talks at Long Island Rail Road. Nearly 600 engineers are casting strike votes ahead of a potential September walkout. Contract demands are rising as unions reject 9.5% raises over three years.

Air

New Boeing 777F lands in Baku as Silk Way eyes greener skies. The delivery is part of a long-term renewal plan through 2030. It reflects the carrier’s mission to modernize and minimize carbon footprint.

Airfreight rates held steady as transpacific patterns shift. Spot pricing from Hong Kong stayed mixed while Southeast Asia gains ground. The industry eyes September for a capacity-driven rebound.

Technology

Smart slopes and silent engines in Volvo’s latest breakthrough. Using GPS and predictive mapping, Volvo FH trucks now coast downhill with engines off. Early data shows lower emissions and fuel savings.

Other

Demand distortions are shaking logistics from port to shelf. A surge in imports driven by trade fears may soon flip. Experts warn the bullwhip effect could leave many carriers idle.
